For over two years (2008-2010) Jo Ann visited with, photographed, and
recorded the stories of 65 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender
Veterans.
On August 25, 2010, Jo Ann began a twenty-eight-day road trip around the United States, driving 10,167 miles, 31 states from Brooklyn, New York to
California, and back to photograph and record the stories of 46 of the 65 LGBT Veterans featured in this book. Included in the book is a selection of iPhone images taken during her road trip.
Proud to Serve: is a full-color photo book featuring 65 portraits and stories of LGBT Veterans who served their country in silence or were discharged under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law.
Proud to Serve has been published worldwide and exhibited in galleries, universities, colleges, LGBT community centers, and on a US Naval base in San Diego during their first LGBT pride event.
This book is in the private White House collection of President Barack Obama.
